Department of Geophysics, Peking University, Beijing 100871 review on the progress in the research of nonlinear atmospheric waves, especially the nonlinear Rossby waves is made in this paper. Many results reported here have been obtained in Peking University.

Department of Geophysics, Peking Universityany results have been obtained in the researches on the nonlinear waves in the atmo-sphere. Long, Benney, Benjeman, Redekopp, Kawahara, Maslowe, Chao Jiping, and Zhang Xuehong and Zeng Qingcun et al. have studied the nonlinear waves by the multi-scale perturbation method. The present authors and Huang Sixun have studied them using the phase-picture analytical method which is relatively simpler.
