The Journal of Public Transportation is an international peer-reviewed open access journal. The Journal contains original research and case studies associated with various forms of public transportation and related transportation and policy issues. Topics are approached from a variety of academic disciplines, including engineering, planning, economics, geography, public policy, political science, and others, and include policy, methodological, technological, and financial aspects. Emphasis is placed on the identification of innovative solutions to public transportation problems. The Journal was founded by the Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) at the University of South Florida. CUTR strives to help improve the performance and relevance of public transportation and other forms of active transportation. Much of CUTR's research is applied, practical research, in support of the implementation of innovative solutions, and is designed to assist those who plan, design, operate, and maintain transit and paratransit systems, commuter assistance programs, and first-mile/last-mile components that support public transportation. CUTR remains affiliated with the Journal and continues to play an active role in its editorial team. The Journal is published with the support of the Mineta Transportation Institute at San Jose State University. Paper Content The Journal will only consider submissions that address public transportation, as defined by the US TRB's Transit Capacity and Quality of Service Manual: "Transportation service to the public on a regular basis using vehicles that transport more than one person for compensation, usually but not exclusively over a set route or routes from one fixed point to another. Routes and schedules of this service may be predetermined by the operator or may be determined through a cooperative arrangement. Subcategories include public transit service and paratransit services that are available to the general public." Articles included in the Journal should be accessible and understandable by personnel in transit properties or related services so the findings can be used to the benefit of passengers, agencies, and communities. Papers featuring case studies should do more than use already accepted methodologies and share findings; the research should advance the state of knowledge and should feature lessons learned and techniques that can be generalized so the information is useful in other locales that may have similar challenges. Papers that are highly technical/mathematical and/or very academic in nature that might be beyond the comprehension of most transit or related agency personnel are not encouraged. Authors should consider submitting these papers to more technical journals. Paper Standards We seek to publish papers that are professionally prepared and include complete literature reviews, well-explained methodologies, solid data, and clear and unbiased conclusions. Papers must be well organized and should follow a general sequence that describes the problem; states the objectives; reviews past work and the literature; describes the approach, assumptions, and data used; discusses the results and limitations; and draws conclusions. Research funding sources and data providers should be acknowledged. International authors should bear in mind that an insufficient translation into English can make a paper awkward and difficult to understand. If necessary, papers should be reviewed and edited by a professional English editor before submission so peer reviewers can provide the most helpful reviews and readers can fully comprehend the information. Papers found to be difficult to understand due to language issues may be returned to the authors for English editing and resubmission.
